The Rainbow Mountain Peru

The Rainbow Mountain Peru tour begins early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 4:30 AM. We depart south of the city, traveling through quiet Andean roads as the sun slowly rises over the mountains.

After about 1 hour and 30 minutes, we arrive in the district of Cusipata, where we enjoy a nutritious Andean breakfast to prepare for the high-altitude hike ahead. Following breakfast, we continue driving for another hour toward the starting point of the trek in the community of Phulawasipata, located at approximately 3,800 meters (12,467 ft) above sea level.

Upon arrival, your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the route, altitude conditions, safety recommendations, and pacing for the hike. From here, we begin our ascent toward Rainbow Mountain, hiking along a scenic trail at the base of the imposing Ausangate Glacier, one of the highest and most sacred mountains in the Cusco region.

The hike takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, gradually climbing to an altitude of 5,000 meters (16,404 ft). Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to observe South American camelids, such as alpacas and llamas, grazing freely across the high plains, as well as native Andean flora adapted to extreme conditions.

As we approach the summit, the vibrant colors of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) begin to reveal themselves—bands of red, yellow, green, turquoise, and purple stretching across the mountainside. Upon reaching the viewpoint, you’ll have ample free time to take photos, admire the scenery, and listen to your guide’s explanation about the geological formation and cultural significance of this natural wonder.

After enjoying the spectacular views and capturing unforgettable memories, we begin our descent along the same trail back to the transport. We then return to Cusipata, where a delicious buffet lunch awaits at a local restaurant, offering a variety of regional dishes with vegetarian options available.

In the afternoon, we start our journey back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 4:30 PM, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, concluding an incredible high-altitude adventure to one of Peru’s most extraordinary destinations.
