You begin the Machu Picchu Sunrise Tour via a tour of the Sacred Valley which takes you to the center of Inca cosmology, visiting some of the Incas sacred site located at the heart of their Empire. The tour begins around 8:45 as you begin to drive out of Cusco and into the fertile Sacred Valley. You will reach lookout points where the tour bus will stop and you will have the opportunity to snap some photos.
Your first stop is the town of Pisac, a small colonial town where on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays there is an extensive market where you can barter for souvenirs and other goods. Surrounding Pisac there is also extensive Inca ruins, elaborate terracing and housing, it is said that Pisac was used for agricultural experiments. You then continue to Urubamba where you will have buffet lunch (included) with the beautiful scenery surrounding you.
It is then on to the town of Ollantaytambo and the fortress that overlooks the small Inca town. Ollantaytambo in fact was the only place where the Incas were actually able to repel Spanish attacks. The vast fortress ruins are an incredible sight too see and the valley itself is unique, making the recounting of its story come to life.
At approximately 6pm you make your way to the nearby Train station at Ollantaytambo, here you take the Expedition train to Machu Picchu. The difference in price for the Sunrise tour is for the return train which can be either Expedition or Vistadome. Vistadome is not used on the route from Ollantytambo to Aguas Calientes as the train schedule would not allow you time for a tour of Ollantaytambo.
Regardless of train class the route to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful in the world. You begin in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and make your way through to the high jungle passes of the Andes, you are surrounded by beautiful flora and incredible scenery.
In the evening you arrive at Aguas Calientes, here you have a free evening to spend exploring the small town. You will also be met by your guides who will give you a short briefing on your next days tour of Machu Picchu.
In the morning you wake up early to hike up to the entrance of Machu Picchu, for the Machu Picchu Sunrise, you also have the option to board one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu if you prefer not to hike. Once up at the ruins you’ll catch a beautiful sunrise over the site (weather permitting) you are then treated to a comprehensive tour of the ruins. Afterwards you have the option of climbing to the peak of Huayna Picchu or exploring the maze of ruins throughout the site.
Huayna Picchu is regulated in two schedules; 200 climbers allowed up at 7AM and the other 200 at 10AM, We recommend purchasing these admission in advance along with the tour as they sell out in advance, from April to September these can sell out several months in advance. There are little words to describe Machu Picchu and no two visits to the site are alike, it truly is a breathtaking landmark.
In the afternoon you can either have lunch outside Machu Picchu or descend to Aguas Calientes and have lunch at one of the many restaurants. The return Expedition train departs at 3:20PM while the Vistadome departs at 4:43PM. Both trains arrive in Poroy 4 hours later where a transport will await you to take you to conclude the tour at Cusco’s Main Plaza. This is the complete Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley experience brought to you by Karikuy Tours!
My boyfriend and I did the sunrise 2 day tour of Machu Picchu with the second day morning hike up Huayna Picchu. I cannot imagine with the lines and number of people doing this tour any other way than having someone arrange all the various transportation, know when to get into line and what to expect. My only criticism was the lodging. They put us in the Denny’s hostal in Aguas Calientes that for one of the two days had NO RUNNING WATER> Not ideal after a long day of sunshine, sweat and crowds. But overall, good experience. Karikuy’s Response: Thank you for the review! Unfortunatley Aguas Calientes suffers from water shortages, all hotels and most hostels store water for emergencies but if the hotel or hostel is full these only last a couple hours. We apologize for the inconveniance, it is not a situation we can control and is up to the local government and utility company to remedy.
My son and I did the sunrise machu picchu tour package in late January. When you consider the logistics involved with all the different “moving parts” necessary to get us to and from Cusco, various pickups and deliveries, it was amazing that everything came off without a hitch. From the guides through the sacred valley and machu picchu, to the hotel arrangements, and the pretravel checkins the night before each trek, things went flawlessly. Thanks Karikuy and Oscars Adventures.
Trip was good. Got to see many great sites in Peru, Machu Picchu was my favorite. We got to see the ruins at sunrise and wow, incredible. Karikuy is very good company and easy to book, price was even better. All services were good and customer service very good. We create our itinerary fast and easy and Karikuy send us price and information. Very good service and will recommend.
The trip of a Lifetime. Great service, great value and a great guide in Miguel. We were a small group and we had an absolute ball. The contact with the locals added to the experience. We packed a lot into our two weeks and I don’t think we could have done better. Highlights were the train from Puno to Cusco and of course the Lares Trek. We climbed the stairs to Machu Picchu and our guide took us to a great spot to see the sunrise. A magical moment. We ascended Huayna Picchu which completed the experience. Glad we chose Karikuy and would not change a thing. Thanks to everyone for the blast!
Choosing Karikuy was the best choice I could’ve made when visiting Peru. I was looking for an Andes adventure and Julio customized the perfect itinerary that included an Inca trek to Machu Picchu with mountain biking, hot springs and zip lining as well as amazing evening and city tours in Lima and Cusco. It was great meeting so many people in the different tour groups and all of the guides throughout the trip were very professional and a lot of fun as well. You can tell Julio only works with the best. The local families I stayed with on the jungle trek, mountain biking at 4k meters in the Andes and seeing Machu Picchu at sunrise are experiences I’ll never forget. Thanks Karikuy!
