Begin your journey with a comfortable hotel pickup in Huaraz between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, where you’ll meet your professional guide and driver. After a brief orientation, you’ll head north on a scenic route along the Callejón de Huaylas, a stunning valley framed by the Cordillera Blanca to the east and the Cordillera Negra to the west.
As you travel through the valley, you’ll pass by typical Andean towns such as Anta, Carhuaz, and Mancos, each offering glimpses into rural life, traditional adobe houses, and colorful local markets. In Carhuaz, you may stop to enjoy a brief break and taste local delicacies like handmade ice cream or fresh bread from a wood-fired oven.
Continuing your journey, the group will arrive in Yungay, a town forever marked by the devastating earthquake and avalanche of 1970. Here, you’ll visit the Campo Santo de Yungay (Yungay Memorial Cemetery), where the former town now rests beneath layers of earth. The site is peaceful and moving, with the Christ the Redeemer statue standing guard and offering panoramic views of the valley and the towering Mount Huascarán.
From Yungay, the bus ascends through winding mountain roads into the Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its spectacular alpine scenery. Upon arrival at Lake Chinancocha (Llanganuco), you’ll be greeted by its surreal turquoise waters, set beneath the dramatic peaks of Huascarán and Huandoy.
Take time to walk along the Chinancocha lakeshore trail, a serene path surrounded by high-altitude forests of queñuales (Polylepis trees), wildflowers, and the calls of native birds. During dry season months (May to September), an alternate walking route — the María Josefa Trail — may be offered, providing an enriching stroll through pristine natural terrain ideal for photography and nature appreciation.
You’ll also have free time to relax, rent a boat to paddle on the lake (optional), or simply enjoy the silence and fresh mountain air.
Before heading back, your guide will share stories about the geological and cultural significance of the region, including ancient glaciation and the formation of the Andes. You’ll return by the same picturesque route, with the sun casting golden hues over the mountains.
Arrival back in Huaraz is expected between 6:30 and 7:00 PM, bringing your unforgettable day to a close — one filled with dramatic landscapes, cultural insights, and peaceful moments in nature.
