8am: Breakfast and free time.
10.30am: Boat ride of approximately 90 min to the “Taricaya Biological Centre” (headquartered in the UK) This centre can count on the collaboration of universities from around the globe who send volunteers helping to guard and reintroduce hurt or confiscated animal s into their natural habitat. We will have sufficient time to see the animals and visit the facilities accompanied by a volunteer of the centre.
The name of the centre “Taricaya” goes back to a conservation project for the river turtles or “tarikayas” that collects, and incubates the eggs and returns the offspring back to the Madre de Dios River upon birth.(unfortunately there is a black market who is responsible for adding this animal to the list of the species in danger of extinction)
There are lots of animals to be seen: Jaguars, various monkeys, tapirs, peccaries and exotic birds such as the Pale-Winged Trumpeter.
Hurt or sick animals captured on the black market or brought from the jungle are nursed and later on returned to their natural environment. The Centre has also constructed a Canopy Walk (Suspension bridge at a height of 42m with a length of 90m, mainly for bird watching).
1pm: Lunch, afterwards 30min of free time you might want to use to talk to the resident volunteers.
2:30pm: 30min trek through primary rainforest to the Canopy Walk
3pm: After climbing the first tower of 14m we will ascend to a platform (height 42m) via the suspension bridge. Here we have an extraordinary panoramic view of the jungle. The trees seen from above, the sounds of the jungle emerging from underneath our feet and the overwhelming green for as far as the eye can see. Few times will you have the chance to experience the jungle in this unique way.
4pm: Return to the boat. Throughout the journey back to Corto Maltes Amazonia you can marvel at the sunset showing off shades of gold, pink, yellow and green creating an almost magical atmosphere. Upon return to the lodge you can refresh yourself at the pool or slow down in the hammocks. Alternatively a massage by Corto Maltes lodges’ qualified personnel might just make your stay with us unforgettable.
8pm: Every dinner is a chance to taste new dishes at Corto Maltes Amazonia. The imagination of our French chef will fascinate you with every dish and his desserts made of tropical fruits.
The night comes alive with animal sounds. You can enjoy this concert in our bar with a cocktail or maybe a cup of tea. The starry night sky is spectacular, especially in moonless nights when the jungle areound Corto Maltes is even more mysterious.
After breakfast its time to say goodbye to the setting and staff of Corto Maltes Amazonia. Your guide will accompany you on your way back to the city. We will pass by our office again to recollect the baggage left. Following that we will visit the local market to show you agricultural products of the region; especially fruits of the Amazon. What an amazing tour with Karikuy Tours. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. Our accommodations were very comfortable in beautiful surroundings. Our meals were delicious. We saw more animals than expected in the forest on the hikes and boat trips. We’re in our mid 60’s and were able to do everything on the tour. We would recommend the 5 day tour to Corto Maltes Amazonia Lodge to anyone interested in a jungle tour.

When I contacted Karikuy I asked for more then a tour, I was looking for a spiritual experience. I had heard there were many places like these in Peru but I also knew I was asking for a lot, however this company did not disappoint and the experience changed me forever. I started my tour by arriving in Lima and trying some of the best food I have ever tasted. God so many different dishes to choose from! The I went to Puno and Lake Titicaca where I spent a night with a local family on Amantani to see their way of live. There are things we truly take for granted in life and spending some time here really opened my eyes as well as the amazing views of the lake. From Puno I went to Cusco to catch my flight to Puerto Maldonado and Corto Maltes Lodge where I had an Ayahuasca session which of course was unforgettable, I believe I came out a different person after that but thats another story unto itself. Having some free time after this experience to reflect on the journey I then traveled to Cusco and to Machu Picchu which is just something heavenly. It is as if you are not on earth, I couldn’t even begin to describe this place. TV or magazines can’t even come close to having you witness this place in person, it really feels like you are on another planet it is so alien. Anyways I am glad I chose Karikuy, they gave me the experience I wanted and much more, I am not the same person as I was before this trip and I am very grateful for that. Thank you and a big hug to all the staff at Karikuy Tours.
