Early Morning Departure from Arequipa
Your adventure begins around 3:30 AM, when we pick you up directly from your hotel in Arequipa’s historic center. As we leave the city under the early morning sky, the drive offers peaceful views of the quiet countryside waking up with the first rays of sunlight.
Stop at Pampa Cañahuas – Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve
Our first scenic stop is the Pampa Cañahuas plateau, located inside the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Here, you’ll spot graceful vicuñas roaming freely in their natural environment, along with llamas and alpacas. The air is crisp and fresh, perfect for capturing amazing photographs of the surrounding volcanoes and grasslands.
Breakfast in Chivay
Upon arrival in the charming town of Chivay, we enjoy a light Andean-style breakfast. Take a moment to rest, acclimate to the altitude, and browse local handicrafts before continuing the tour.
Patapampa – Volcanoes Viewpoint
Next, we head to one of the highest points of the route—Patapampa at 4,910 meters (16,109 feet). From this majestic viewpoint, you’ll take in panoramic views of snowcapped volcanoes such as Ampato, Sabancaya, and Hualca Hualca, forming the awe-inspiring Cordillera de los Andes.
Cruz del Cóndor – Condor Viewing Point
One of the main highlights of the tour: we arrive at the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint. From this dramatic cliffside lookout, you’ll witness the legendary flight of the Andean condor—the world’s largest flying bird—soaring effortlessly over the vast Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons on Earth. Your guide will explain the cultural and ecological significance of this sacred bird in Andean mythology.
Visit to Maca and Yanque Villages
On the return journey, we stop at the traditional villages of Maca and Yanque. These picturesque towns are home to charming colonial churches, vibrant artisan markets, and warm local hospitality. Learn about daily life in the Andes and capture photos of local residents in colorful traditional attire.
Buffet Lunch in Chivay
Back in Chivay, we treat you to a delicious buffet lunch featuring regional Andean cuisine. Taste local favorites such as quinoa soup, alpaca meat, and a variety of vegetables and desserts sourced from the region.
Optional Visit to La Calera Hot Springs
For those seeking relaxation, an optional visit to the La Calera hot springs is available. Soak in naturally heated pools surrounded by stunning canyon scenery—a perfect way to unwind after a full day of exploration.
Return to Arequipa
We begin the drive back to Arequipa in the afternoon, arriving at your hotel around 6:00 PM. You’ll return with incredible memories, spectacular photos, and a deeper appreciation of Peru’s Andean landscapes and culture.
