Our journey begins with a scenic drive from the city of Huaraz towards the east, heading towards the charming village of Pitec, located at 3,850 meters above sea level. Along the way, we’ll pass through traditional Andean towns such as Unchus (3,300 m) and Llupa (3,500 m). These picturesque villages offer a glimpse into rural life in the Andes and present great photo opportunities with traditional adobe houses and quiet farming life.
As we ascend, the views become increasingly dramatic, revealing a panoramic vista of the Cordillera Blanca, one of the most stunning mountain ranges in Peru and home to some of the highest peaks in the Americas.
Once we reach Pitec, we’ll prepare for the trek. After a quick safety briefing and final gear check, we begin the hike toward Churup Lake, entering the scenic Churup Gorge (Quebrada Churup). The trail begins gently but becomes increasingly steep and rocky as we ascend.
Expect a 3-hour trek that requires moderate to high effort, especially in the final stretch where some light scrambling and use of a fixed cable (via ferrata) might be required depending on trail conditions. The landscape alternates between mountain meadows, granite rock formations, and occasional waterfalls, providing a dynamic and photogenic backdrop.
Throughout the ascent, our guide will share insights about the local flora, fauna, and the cultural importance of the mountains to the Quechua communities.
At 4,450 meters (14,599 ft), the turquoise waters of Churup Lake come into view, surrounded by the towering snow-capped Churup Mountain (5,493 m). You’ll have approximately one hour to enjoy this magical setting: take pictures, rest, enjoy a snack, and simply breathe in the tranquility of one of the most iconic alpine lakes in the region.
For the more adventurous, there’s an optional short hike along the lakeshore for alternative photo angles or peaceful solitude.

After enjoying the scenery and regaining energy, we begin the descent along the same path. The return hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, offering new perspectives of the landscape under the midday light.
Our private transport will be waiting for us at Pitec to take us back to Huaraz.
We arrive back in Huaraz in the afternoon, tired but filled with memories and stunning photographs from a day spent immersed in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca. This trek is ideal for acclimatization before higher-altitude adventures or simply to enjoy one of the most breathtaking day hikes in Peru.
