We leave early in the morning from Cusco (3350m) heading northwest in private transportation toward the town of Cachora (2850m). On the way, we’ll stop for breakfast before continuing to the starting point of our trek at Capuliyoc, surrounded by mountains and the majestic snow-capped Padreyoc peak (5571m).
Here we’ll meet the muleteers and mules who will help carry the camping gear throughout the expedition. From Capuliyoc Pass (2800m), we’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the Apurímac Canyon and part of the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex in the distance. After a short break to admire the views, we begin our zigzagging descent along the mountain edge toward our campsite at Chiquisca (1930m), a small warm-climate village where we’ll have lunch and spend the night.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours in warm weather with mosquitoes.
Distance: 8 km
After a hearty breakfast, we descend for about 30 minutes to Playa Rosalina (1500m). From here, we begin a challenging ascent out of the canyon through warm conditions until we reach the town of Marampata (2850m), where we’ll set up camp with a beautiful view of the Choquequirao complex.
At sunset, you’ll witness an enigmatic spectacle at Choquequirao, often accompanied by the symbolic Andean condor descending from the highest peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range to the archaeological site (3033m).
Hiking time: 7 hours in warm and cold weather.
Distance: 12 km
Early in the morning after breakfast, we’ll observe the sunrise over the Choquequirao complex. With your professional guide, you’ll delve into the history, architecture, and recent archaeological discoveries of this site.
Currently, only 30% of Choquequirao (“Cradle of Gold”) has been restored, and many ancestral secrets remain. Ongoing restoration projects aim to reveal the full extent of this sacred city, which some believe could rival Machu Picchu in importance and beauty.
After the guided visit, we return to Marampata and descend to the depths of the Apurímac Canyon (Playa Rosalina – 1500m), then ascend again to our campsite in Chiquisca (1930m).
Hiking time: 6 hours in warm weather with mosquitoes.
Distance: 14 km
In the morning, we begin our ascent through dry terrain, with the temperature rising as the sun climbs. At Capuliyoc Pass (2850m), we’ll take a brief rest and enjoy spectacular views of the Apurímac Canyon—often a great spot to see condors in flight.
From this point, the trail levels out, allowing you to take in more incredible views of the surrounding mountains and snow-capped peaks. We’ll arrive in the town of Cachora, where our transportation will be waiting to return us to the city of Cusco.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours in warm weather with mosquitoes.
Distance: 8 km
